Learning, Leading, Succeeding

James Kenan High School (JKHS) has not only allowed me to visit and explore places outside of Duplin County but has provided me with many resources and opportunities to help me achieve my goals. James Kenan offers many clubs and extracurricular activities to help students as well as motivate them. For me, it has been SGA, Beta Club, JROTC, the Career and College Promise Program and more. Each program pushes me to be a better student and peer and encourages me to work hard to achieve my goals. JKHS is special because I know I can always count on my teachers, coaches, administrators, and peers. We can push through any challenges we face, together.

JKHS has four total bands: Concert Band and Symphonic Band, that combine to form the Combined Wind Ensemble, as well as the Tiger Marching Band. The first three groups perform biannually as well as at various community events. The Tiger Marching Band performs at all home varsity football games and the annual Warsaw Veterans Day Parade. This program is special because it fosters cultivation of character, musical excellence, community engagement, and school spirit. Under the leadership of band director, Ms. Samantha Best, the program is experiencing a resurgence, which is exemplified by the Symphonic Band’s recent participation in Musical Performance Adjudication (MPA) for the first time in over a decade. This shows a clear dedication and commitment to progress and excellence within the program.
